Torah Umesorah Mashgiach & Mechaneches Training Program

A Professional Development Program for Yeshiva-Based Student Support

Program Overview

The Torah Umesorah Mashgiach & Mechaneches Training Program is a groundbreaking initiative that empowers mechanchim with the tools they need to truly make a difference. From fostering emotional growth to supporting the developmental wellbeing of today’s talmidim, this program provides the knowledge, skills, and sensitivity to navigate the challenges of our ever-changing world.

Who Is It For?

Originally created to train full-time mashgichim and mechanchos for yeshivos, this program has quickly become a game-changer for educators of all kinds. From menahelim and menahalos to rebbeim, moros, and even roshei yeshiva, it offers powerful insights into the inner worlds of talmidim. With practical tools to support their growth beyond the classroom, this program is transforming how educators inspire and guide the next generation. Participants must be employed by a yeshiva or day school and recommended by the hanhalah.

The Role

The 'mashgiach ruchani' is the heart of the yeshiva, dedicated to nurturing the well-being of every student. Whether it’s offering a listening ear or providing guidance, the role goes beyond the academic, ensuring that every student — even the all-star shortstop with a streak of alephs — feels truly seen, heard, and appreciated.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Personal Engagement: The mashgiach or mechaneches meets regularly with students to build trust and normalize the encounter, creating a relationship that fosters openness and growth.
  • Resource to Staff and Parents: While not a therapist, the mashgiach and mechanches is well-versed in psychological frameworks and mental health awareness. They act as a liaison and guide for navigating the challenges facing students today.
  • Sensitive and Informed: They understands a wide range of student needs — including anxiety, ADHD, trauma, bereavement, grief, and the unique challenges of yesomim and children from broken homes.
  • Safe Haven: Their presence, and their office space, serves as a secure, approachable place within the yeshiva, often bridging the gap between clinical therapy and the daily rhythm of school life.

Program Structure

  • Schedule: 25 sessions, held on Sundays from 3:00 to 6:00 PM (EST) via Zoom.
  • Cohort Experience: Includes several in-person gatherings to foster camaraderie, trust, and mutual support among participants.
  • Year 2 and Beyond: Graduates are invited to participate in ongoing biweekly peer supervision, conducted by Rabbi Zev Brown, providing a platform for continued growth and shared insight.

Instructors

Led by a team of seasoned professionals, including veteran mechanchim, mental health experts, and rabbanim deeply familiar with the world of chinuch and hanhalah, the course blends Torah values with cutting-edge understanding of human development.
